Minnesota’s – and America’s – first Somali-American legislator is going to be on one of America’s highest-rated TV shows.
Rep. Ilhan Omar is one of the upcoming guests on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah this week, the show announced on Instagram Sunday.
This will be her first time appearing on the show
There aren’t any details about what will be discussed, and Omar hasn’t even mentioned the guest spot on social media yet. But both Noah and Omar are known for incisive political commentary.
They’re also both immigrants; Noah was born in South Africa and moved to the United States in 2011, while Omar was born in Somalia and spent time in Kenya as a refugee before moving to the U.S. with her family in the 1990s.
So what will Noah ask the first Somali-American, Muslim woman in office? Well, among Omar’s initiatives, she’s known to advocate for economic, social, racial, and environmental justice.
She’s also spoken out about police reform, so it’s possible they might discuss the Philando Castile trial – Noah analyzed the case on his show several times, and has spoken about his own experiences with American police in the past.
The episode will air at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13.
The Daily Show With Trevor Noah just had its most-watched month ever in June, with over 1.5 million viewers
